GCMF awards grant to South County Hospital to improve sepsis patient care

Sepsis is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and treatment must begin quickly in order to save lives. We’re thrilled to share this announcement during Sepsis Awareness Month.

The Gianna Cirella Memorial Fund has provided a one-year, $25,000 grant to South County Hospital in order to improve the care of patients with sepsis. The grant will enable sepsis coordinators at the hospital to provide evening consultations with care teams about how to provide appropriate, time-sensitive care to patients with sepsis or septic shock. This coverage is important because about one-quarter of requests for sepsis consults take place during the evening hours.

South County Hospital is a 100-bed acute care, nonprofit hospital located in Wakefield, RI. It serves patients in the Washington County area, including students and staff at the University of Rhode Island.
